The QR-bill, and what goes on it.

At the bottom of your invoice sits a payment part with a QR code. Your client scans it with their banking app, and the amount, account and reference are already filled in.

In short

  • With your normal IBAN you use a SCOR reference or none at all. You don't need a QR-IBAN for that.
  • From November 2027, invoices in EUR only work with the normal IBAN, not the QR-IBAN.
  • Since November 2025 addresses can only be structured, with street, number, postcode and town in separate fields.
  • If you're not registered for VAT, the invoice must not show any VAT.

What a QR-bill is

The QR-bill is the Swiss standard for invoices paid through e-banking. It's published by SIX, which runs Swiss payment traffic.

At the bottom of the A4 page there are two parts, together 210 × 105 mm: the receipt on the left (62 mm) and the payment part on the right (148 mm) with the QR code. The code holds everything the payment needs. In a PDF, lines with a pair of scissors separate both parts from the rest of the page.

Nothing else goes on the payment part, no advertising and nothing on the back. Only Arial, Frutiger, Helvetica and Liberation Sans are allowed, in black.

IBAN or QR-IBAN

Your IBAN is your account number as it appears in e-banking. For the QR-bill it has to be Swiss or from Liechtenstein, starting with CH or LI, 21 characters long.

The QR-IBAN is a second number for the same account. You can spot it by positions 5 to 9, which are between 30000 and 31999. Banks give it to companies that want to match lots of payments automatically. It only works with a QR reference, and from November 2027 only in CHF.

For a sole proprietorship the normal IBAN is all you need. Zettelio only takes the normal IBAN and turns down a QR-IBAN.

Which reference

The reference helps you match a payment to the right invoice. There are three kinds:

  • SCOR, the international Creditor Reference under ISO 11649. It starts with «RF», then two check digits and your own reference, 5 to 25 characters in all. Works with the normal IBAN, in CHF and EUR. It's printed in blocks of four.
  • QRR, the 27-digit QR reference. Only with a QR-IBAN, and from November 2027 only in CHF.
  • No reference (NON). Then that field stays empty, and you match the payment by amount or a message.

Zettelio builds the SCOR reference from your invoice number. 2026-015 becomes RF70 2026 015.

CHF and EUR

A QR-bill is in CHF or EUR. There are no other currencies.

Version 2.4 of the standard is out from 14.11.2026. Nothing changes technically for CHF, and version 2.3 stays valid until November 2027. From November 2027, invoices in EUR only allow two combinations: IBAN with a SCOR reference, or IBAN with no reference. The QR-IBAN with a QR reference is then kept for CHF.

EUR payments will run as SEPA transfers after November 2027 at the latest. A message you add next to the reference may not reach your bank for EUR payments, so with EUR, rely on the reference.

Addresses

Since 22.11.2025 the QR-bill only allows structured addresses: name, street, house number, postcode, town and country, each in its own field. The old combined address is gone.

The payee's name has to match the account holder. Your client's address is optional; without it, the payment part prints an empty box for the client to fill in.

What else goes on the invoice

For invoices without VAT the law doesn't prescribe a fixed list. It's sensible and usual to include your name and address, your client's, the date, an invoice number, what you did, the price and a due date.

If you're not registered for VAT, no VAT may appear on the invoice. If it does anyway, you owe it to the state until you correct it.

With a fixed due date on the invoice, your client is in default once that day has passed, even without a reminder. Without a date, you have to send a reminder first. Default interest is 5 % a year unless you agreed otherwise.

You keep invoices and receipts for ten years.

Questions

Do I need a QR-IBAN?
No. With your normal IBAN and a SCOR reference, or no reference at all, the QR-bill works just the same. The QR-IBAN pays off for companies with very many payments.
Can I send a QR-bill in EUR?
Yes. From November 2027, only with the normal IBAN, with a SCOR reference or without a reference.
What changes with version 2.4?
Nothing for CHF. Version 2.4 is out from 14.11.2026, and version 2.3 stays valid until November 2027. From November 2027, invoices in EUR only work with the normal IBAN.
Can I write «VAT 0 %» on my invoice?
No. If you're not registered for VAT, the invoice must not mention VAT at all.
How long do I keep invoices?
Ten years, from the end of the business year.
